Our People: Past & Present
History

In 1928, when Swiss immigrant John Aebischer opened his jewelry store in Struthers, little did he realize that it would become what it is today, four generations later - the most respected, family-owned jewelry store in the Mahoning Valley.
In the early 1950s John’s son Harold began working in the store just after serving in the military. By 1967, he assumed ownership of the store and moved it to its current location in Poland in 1976.
And today, just as his grandfather did so many years ago, Harold’s son, Doug sits at John’s original workbench, still providing the same high level of craftsmanship that the store’s original customers received so many years ago. A graduate Gemologist, Doug understands that experience and knowledge go a long way to building trust, a quality that customers expect in their relationship with a jeweler.
And the legacy continues with young Adam Aebischer joining his parents, Doug and Karen, in the family business. It seems that customers will be receiving personalized, professional service and the highest quality jewelry for many, many years to come.
Some things just never change.
Our People

“Without these wonderful people working with us, using their God-given gifts and talents, Aebischer’s would not be the same. Our most valuable asset is not all the diamonds and jewelry, it’s our dedicated staff.” - Doug & Karen Aebischer
Customers come to Aebischer’s as much for our people as they do for our jewelry. They like the fact that our staff doesn’t work on commission, so there’s absolutely no pressure to buy. Customers appreciate that.

Joining the Aebischer’s staff in 2006, Betty Jo brings a wealth of experience and expertise in the areas of remounts and jewelry repairs. She worked for Stringer Jewelry of Girard for nearly 22 years. Upon their closing, after 66 years in business, she came to Aebischer’s. It seems as though she has built quite a reputation for herself. Customers routinely come in with their precious heirlooms and keepsakes, entrusting Betty Jo with not just their jewelry, but with the memories they most often represent. A resident of Girard, Ohio, she loves her job, especially when she sees a customer’s reaction to the work she has done.

Poland resident Cindy Prince loves coming to work at Aebischer’s because she knows that she will be making customers happy. “When I show a customer that perfect necklace, bracelet, or ring, their smile tells me I’ve done my job,” says Cindy. Her days at the store are divided between serving customers and managing inventory. When not doing the job she loves, she enjoys exercising, reading, spending time with her grandchildren and heading off to the family cabin in the mountains.

Andy thinks she has the greatest job in the world. In addition to being around beautiful jewelry all day, she gets to work with a great team of caring professionals. And the customers? Andy says, “Our staff is known for being friendly and attentive. People come in for our attitude and knowledge as much as they do jewelry.” Outside the store her loves are her grandchildren, church and traveling.

Debbie has been a key member of the Aebischer’s family since the mid 1990s. Whether a customer comes in for a watch battery or a diamond ring, she treats each one like they’re special. “That’s because they are,” she remarks. She particularly loves the fact that a day rarely goes by without a customer coming in and relating a story about the store that goes back decades, if not longer.

The fourth generation of an Aebischer being a part of the family jewelry legacy officially began in 2009 when Adam Aebischer, son of owners Doug and Karen, joined the family business. After studying mechanical engineering in college, Adam decided to give the jewelry industry a try. With his penchant for all things mechanical, he quickly gravitated to benchwork in the store, concentrating on repairs. He particularly likes the relaxed atmosphere and getting the opportunity to interact with customers.

Wendy is the newest member to the Aebischer’s jewelry team. She has a long history of extraordinary customer service. After working for Casual Corner for twenty years, Wendy was a valued associate with Smith & Company Jeweler for three years where she learned the jewelry business. Aebischer’s is her new home. An avid cyclist, she also enjoys music and cars. Wendy looks forward to making your visit to Aebischer’s an enjoyable one.
