Doug Aebischer, Owner
Certified Graduate Gemologist, Gemological Institute of America
Doug Aebischer takes great pleasure in carrying on the tradition of quality craftsmanship and dedicated customer service demonstrated by his father and grandfather.
He and his wife, Karen, have been married since 1982 and have three children - two sons, Adam and Alex, who comprise the fourth generation of Aebischer jewelers, and a daughter, Abby.
Doug is a proud graduate of Poland High School and Youngstown State University, where he earned his business degree prior to obtaining his Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America. He worked full-time for the family business before taking over ownership from his father in 1996.
In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, photography, and spending time with his family.
Adam Aebischer
Certified Graduate Gemologist, Gemological Institute of America; Certified Diamond Setter and Bench Jeweler, New Approach School for Jewelers; Certified Jewelry Repair Technician
As a child, Adam enjoyed playing with and fixing anything mechanical. This passion inspired him to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology at YSU after graduating from Poland High School in 2007.
While in college, Adam enjoyed working with customers at Special Tee Golf in Boardman. After Special Tee Golf went out of business, he decided that working for the family business could tie together his passion for fixing things and working with the community. He joined Aebischer's Jewelry in January 2009.
Since then, Adam has earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from YSU as well as several prestigious jeweler certifications for the benefit of his customers.
Outside of work, Adam enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, along with sneaking in the occasional round of golf.
Alex Aebischer
Certified diamond setters and bench jewelers from the New Approach School for Jewelers, certified jewelry repair technician
Alex graduated from Poland Seminary High School in 2009. He worked golf course maintenance and as a dishwasher and cook at Reserve Run Golf Course. He went to Youngstown State University and graduated in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications. After college, still following his love for golf, he worked at The Lake Club in the office as a project coordinator.
He then decided to go into the family business and train as a bench jeweler as a fourth generation after his father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He wanted to be more involved in the trades and had an affinity for working with his hands and understand the mechanics of things, especially with jewelry.
Alex is always training, researching, and learning ways to master his craft at the bench. By adopting new technology, tools, and methods, he wants the repair shop to have the ability to do more while also building on the age-old techniques and traditional methods of the jewelers’ trade.
Alex is married to his wife Becca and they have two Siberian huskies, Hafis Murren and Hamlet Wyler. They love to spend time outside and with family and friends.
Our Roots
An American Dream
When John Aebischer started Aebischer’s Jewelry in 1928, his approach to getting business was simple and effective. Visible through the bay window of a small shop in Struthers, the Swiss immigrant took apart his own watch and reassembled it several times a day until someone – his very first customer - finally came in and said, “I see you work on watches. Mine isn’t working correctly. Can you fix it?”
That moment was just the beginning of the American dream for John and his wife, Johanna, who had immigrated to the United States the year prior. They arrived unable to speak a word of English, expecting their first child, and hoping to find work in the bustling Steel Valley of Ohio. An experienced watchmaker, John’s tools were stolen shortly after coming to America. He worked for another jeweler for about six months before deciding to open his own shop on Bridge Street in Struthers, Ohio. The shop would remain in the same location until May of 1976 when the family moved the business to its current location in the Village of Poland.
The Aebischer family serviced watches and clocks for years before adding jewelry repair to their capabilities. As time went on, they began selling watches and jewelry as well.
John and Johanna turned the business over to their son, Harold, in 1967. Harold’s son, Doug, eventually joined the company to perform watch and clock repair. Doug attended Youngstown State University and then earned his Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America. When Harold retired in 1996, Doug and his wife, Karen, assumed ownership of the store.
Doug’s and Karen’s son, Adam , joined the business in 2009. Like his father, Adam earned his Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America. He is also a certified jewelry repair technician.
Today, Aebischer’s Jewelry is known for exceptional service, quality and integrity. What started out as just a dream is now a full-service, four-generation jewelry store helping the community celebrate all of life’s special moments.
